القاضي قال له : " أنت تعرف أنك سارق وسوف أحكم عليك
بدفع 10 دولارات وأعرف أنك لا تملكها لأنك سرقت رغيف خبز
لذلك سأدفعها عنك " .
دهش جميع الحضور في تلك اللحظة وشاهدوا القاضي يخرج
10 دولارات من جيبه ويطلب أن تودع في الخزينة كبدل حكم
هذا العجوز .
ثم وقف فنظر إلى الحاضرين وقال : " محكوم عليكم جميعاً بدفع
10 دولارات لأنكم تعيشون في بلدة يضطر فيها الفقير إلى سرقة
رغيف خبز " .
في تلك الجلسة تم جمع 480 دولاراً ومنحها القاضي للرجل العجوز .
يُقال أن هذه القصة حقيقية فعلاً ..
وأنها وراء قصة كفالة الدول الحديثة للفقراء فيها .

The mayor of New York City (1934~1945), Fiorello H. LaGuardia, was a warm-hearted man who won the respect of many people. Before he became mayor of New York City, he was a justice of the peace in New York City. One day he had to judge an old man who was prosecuted, because he was arrested while stealing bread. He asked the old man, "Why did you steal bread?"
The old man said tearfully, "I was so hungry because I had starved for several days. Unconsciously I took the bread. I am so sorry."
Then the judge sentenced the old man to pay a fine of $10. The judge said, "You have to pay a fine of $10."
The judge took $10 out of his pocket and said, "I will pay the fine. I have lived with so much good food without knowing that there are starving people wandering the streets of New York City like this old man. This is my sin. So I will pay this penalty. It is not his fault that this old man was compelled to steal bread to fill his hungry stomach. It is my fault. I didn't look after these people as a judge, who is used to having good food, being dressed well, and having lived well."
The judge looked around at the people in the courtroom and said, "If anybody wants to pay the fine as a sinner like me, why don't you do it?" Then he passed his hat around to the people, and $47 was collected during that time. He gave the money to the old man and said, "Buy some bread for yourself with this money."
The old man left the court in tears. Later, Judge LaGuardia was elected New York City's 99th mayor. The airport in Queens was named Fiorello H. LaGuardia Field in his memory.
As we live in this world, if we turn all blame on ourselves, it helps us to repent with a broken heart, to be humble, to s God's help, and to be blessed by God's grace.
